Seagull Shines on a Dark Day

The 1st XI were looking to chase down Heathmont’s 203 at Mazenod on Saturday.  Resuming at 1/15 the firsts got off to cautious start before wickets fell steadily.  The ones went from 1/35 to 7/70 to have the side reeling. Only a late cameo from Rob Howes (27*) was able to put some respectability into the score as we were dismissed for 100 just on tea.

Heathmont took the opportunity to have a shot at an outright but some resilient batting from Michael Muttiah and Rhys Berryman put that out of the question.  Rhys was dismissed just before drinks at 1/44 when the match was called off.  A disappointing result for the 1st XI who now slip to 11th on the ladder with only two wins for the season.

The 2nd XI were playing for pride as they resumed 50 runs behind in their second innings and trying to prevent an outright result. Two wickets fell within the first three over and if not for a stoic 43 from Tim Bourbon the twos got have suffered further embarrassment.  The twos were dismissed also for 100 leaving Heathmont a chase of 50 runs.  Heathmont went on to pass our score 4 wickets down to leave the 2nd XI bottom of the ladder and suffering the indignity of an outright loss.  The two’s are at their lowest but have enough pride and ticker to come back fighting this week and get back on the board and out of relegation.

The 3rd XI got off to a good start after resuming at 2/42 chasing 139 for victory.  Cuz and Steve Ware were looking good and setting a solid foundation before a dubious umpiring decision saw Cuz depart at 3/97 for a well made 26.  With 43 still needed for victory a little tremor was felt as the Thirds suffered a mid-order collapse including the loss of Steve Ware for a very well made 71 and one short of his highest score.  The three’s would go on to pass Trinity Willison’s score 6 wickets down before hitting out and being dismissed for 161.  The win was a very important one for the Thirds who now move to fifth on the ladder and sit 0.05 outside the top 4.  A big few weeks ahead for the Thirds.

The 4th XI returned to our home away from home against the third placed side.  Resuming at 1/10 Wyclif were restricted early from the bowling of Michael Riley.  Riles would go on to bowl 10 overs for the day and finish with figures of 2/3, two of those runs coming from an edge through slips.  It was a dominant performance by the Fours who eventually bowled Wyclif out for 101.  The wickets were shared with Darryn Hayman and Matt White snaring three wickets each and Matt Czarnota-Bojarski and Mick Riley two each.

The win has seen the fourths rise back up to top of the ladder after two wins in a row.

The Juniors resumed at home on Saturday morning and will have some work to do this week.  Bowling first the Juniors kept Eildon Park Wildcats to 8/179.  Best of the bowlers were Luke Dodson (2/10) and Matthew Macaro (2/16).  The boys have some work to do this week with the bat and also with the ball after conceding 77 extras.

The Veterans also resumed and were eager to return to the winners list in a Home match against Burwood.  The result came down to the wire with our boys needing 6 to win from the final over.  Captain Amo didn’t waste much time and hit a six off the first ball of the over to secure a victory for the Vets and keep alive a slim finals dream.

With no training Thursday due to our annual Charity Match it will be imperative for all players to get to training on Tuesday and improve on weekend performances.
